At Smitten Kitten Rescue, our Foster-To-Adopt program is more than a pathway to adoption—it is the heart of everything we do. As a kitten-focused rescue, many of the lives we save are tiny, vulnerable babies who thrive best in the comfort of a home environment rather than a shelter or communal rescue setting. Through Foster-To-Adopt, these kittens are given the opportunity to grow, heal, socialize, and prepare for their forever future while already beginning that journey with the family who hopes to welcome them home.
Young kittens benefit tremendously from moving out of a shelter or rescue environment and into a loving home. While shelters and rescues work tirelessly to save lives, they can still be stressful places for developing kittens. Noise, constant movement, exposure to many animals, and limited one-on-one interaction can be overwhelming for little ones who are still learning about the world.
A Foster-To-Adopt placement allows kittens to:
For many kittens, these early experiences shape the rest of their lives. A foster home gives them the best possible start.
Our Foster-To-Adopt program does not just change the future for one kitten—it creates space to save many more.
When a kitten moves into a Foster-To-Adopt home, it opens valuable room within our rescue to bring in additional kittens who need immediate help. Every foster placement means another life can be rescued.
It also supports the health of our rescue population. Reducing the number of kittens in shared environments helps decrease the risk of illness transmission and limits exposure during vulnerable developmental stages. Fewer animals in communal care means better biosecurity, healthier kittens, and improved outcomes for everyone.
Simply put: every Foster-To-Adopt family becomes part of our lifesaving mission.
One of the most rewarding parts of our program is that families can begin building a bond with their future companion while we continue providing the medical care they need.
During the Foster-To-Adopt period, all approved medical care is covered by Smitten Kitten Rescue, including at minimum:
✔ Age-appropriate vaccines
✔ Deworming treatments
✔ Rabies vaccination (when age appropriate)
✔ Veterinary wellness examinations
✔ Spay or neuter surgery
To provide additional peace of mind, kittens are also microchipped before entering foster care, helping ensure they can be identified and reunited if they ever become lost.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of all is time.
Foster-To-Adopt gives families the opportunity to truly know their kitten before adoption is finalized. They get to watch the playful zoomies, discover favorite toys, learn their unique personality, celebrate milestones, and create a bond that begins long before “adoption day.”
By the time adoption is complete, they are not bringing home a stranger.
They are welcoming home family.
Foster-To-Adopt is rescue, healing, and forever beginnings—all wrapped into one program. And at Smitten Kitten Rescue, it is truly the heart behind what we do.
All applicants must first complete a Foster Application, and follow up with an Adoption Application if approved. Fosters must be a resident of Pocatello <or have prior authorization for fostering in another town> and agree to fulfill future scheduled appointments for remaining vaccines, vet checks, and or surgeries. The non-refundable adoption fee must be payed in full prior to the release of our rescue into your care. The adoption will not be finalized until all required medical care is complete, and contract is signed. This ensures our rescues receive the best chance while not under our direct care.
